Google To Wind Down SG&E Studios

Google have confirmed that it will no longer be expanding into its 1st party games studio; SG&E (Stadia Games & Entertainment). The news comes as a bit of a shock to the community, but one that I feel does make sense.

While this may come as a dissapointment to many. Game developing costs a lot of money. And even from one of the richest companies in the world, Google still has to make decsions based on financial loss. So the decsion to save money and invest into 2nd and 3rd party games just makes more sense right now.

Did I want to see native cloud games from the Stadia team? Of course.
Will it affect me playing on Stadia? Absolutely not.

Stadia still works perfectly for me, and has continued to grow and expand. This is definitely the future of gaming, and if it means we get games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, Howarts Legacy and Gotham Knights, then I’m all for it. The future is cloud and we get to experience that right now, without the need to put money down for expensive hardware.

The Stadia team have confirmed a sort of road map for 2021, and are hard at work getting games on the platform for 2022 and beyond. But lets focus on the now and just enjoy playing our games, with no downloads, no updates and no waiting.

Read the full press release below:

We launched Stadia with the goal of making your favorite games instantly available wherever you want to play them. With the recent successful launch of Cyberpunk 2077 on Stadia, gameplay on all types of devices, including iOS, growing our slate of YouTube integrations, and our global expansions, it’s clear that Stadia’s technology has been proven and works at scale. Having games streamed to any screen is the future of this industry, and we’ll continue to invest in Stadia and its underlying platform to provide the best cloud gaming experience for our partners and the gaming community. This has been the vision of Stadia since the beginning.

In 2021, we’re expanding our efforts to help game developers and publishers take advantage of our platform technology and deliver games directly to their players. We see an important opportunity to work with partners seeking a gaming solution all built on Stadia’s advanced technical infrastructure and platform tools. We believe this is the best path to building Stadia into a long-term, sustainable business that helps grow the industry.

Creating best-in-class games from the ground up takes many years and significant investment, and the cost is going up exponentially. Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games. With the increased focus on using our technology platform for industry partners, Jade Raymond has decided to leave Google to pursue other opportunities. We greatly appreciate Jade’s contribution to Stadia and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. Over the coming months, most of the SG&E team will be moving on to new roles. We’re committed to working with this talented team to find new roles and support them.

What does this mean if you’re a current or future Stadia gamer? You can continue playing all your games on Stadia and Stadia Pro, and we’ll continue to bring new titles from third parties to the platform. We’re committed to the future of cloud gaming, and will continue to do our part to drive this industry forward. Our goal remains focused on creating the best possible platform for gamers and technology for our partners, bringing these experiences to life for people everywhere.

Stadia Good Stuff News Roundup

Since last week, Stadia players have gained access to exclusive and free new demos and a beta of upcoming games. In fact, players have had the chance to chomp their way to victory in the PAC-MAN™ Mega Tunnel Battle demo, lead their own unique cultures to prosperity in the OpenDev Beta of HUMANKIND, and embark on a quest to discover the mysterious Secret of the Cyclops in the demo of Immortals Fenyx Rising. Before these gameplay opportunities disappear, we caught up with the teams behind each game to get an overview of what’s new for players to explore, plus tips and tricks from the experts.

If you’re reading this and haven’t tried these games yet, don’t wait! Click the links below to play these games instantly on Stadia, no Stadia Pro membership or form of payment required.

Immortals Fenyx Rising Demo
Active until 9AM PT, October 29

In the demo of Immortals Fenyx Rising, you’ll experience each of the core pillars of the open-world action adventure game. That includes fast-paced risky traversal, over-the-top mythological combat, and challenging puzzles – all in a unique area built exclusively for you to explore. We talked with Scott Philips, Game Director at Ubisoft to learn more:

Immortals Fenyx Rising is a brand new entrant to Ubisoft’s already impressive catalogue. What should players know about this epic adventure in Ancient Greece?

Immortals Fenyx Rising is an epic open-world action adventure game with RPG elements where players will embark on a journey to save the Greek gods from a dark, forgotten curse. Fenyx, our hero, will prove their legendary heroism by using abilities, gear, and weapons all gifted by the gods in fast-paced battles against dangerous mythological creatures and ultimately Typhon, the deadliest Titan in Greek mythology. Players will be able to fully customize the appearance, gear, and godly powers of Fenyx in order to create their own mythical hero and prepare for a battle of strength and wits in an epic fight for the ages.

Any tips for players just getting started on the demo?

First – use your godly abilities – in and outside of combat! These abilities cost stamina, so you need to pay attention when using them but they can turn the tide of a battle or allow you to reach new heights!

To compensate during combat, use hits with your sword to regenerate stamina more quickly and unleash devastating combos. By mixing sword, axe, bow, and abilities together you should be able to conquer any combat challenges in the demo.

Don’t forget to use your potions when you’re in danger – either when traversing the environment for a stamina boost or when in combat to replenish your health. They can be both life savers and push you over the edge to success.

Finally, explore to your heart’s content! There are a lot of secrets in this mysterious archipelago…

What can players learn about Immortals Fenyx Rising from the Stadia demo?

Outside of the playable area that we’ve built specifically for this demo, players will get a sense of the light hearted tone of the game and briefly meet both Fenyx and the two narrators of the adventure – Zeus, the King of the Gods and Prometheus, the titan who gave fire to humans.

In addition, players who complete the demo will unlock the Stadium outfit, a unique armor set for Fenyx. This armor will be available in their main game when Immortals Fenyx Rising launches on December 3rd, so be sure to pre-order Immortals Fenyx Rising on the Stadia store!

PAC-MAN™ Mega Tunnel Battle Demo
Active until 9AM PT, October 27

PAC-MAN Mega Tunnel Battle is arriving First on Stadia when it launches on November 17, and the demo now available introduces players to the game with Elimination mode, going head-to-head in 64-player last-PAC-MAN-standing battles. To get a handle on all the new power-ups, mazes, and Spectator mode, we chatted with Stephanie Fawaz, Producer at Heavy Iron Studios:

This is definitely the biggest PAC-MAN game we’ve ever played with 64 players – but what else makes this game exciting and different?

One of the most exciting new things we’ve brought to the game is Spectator Mode, which allows the audience to be included in the gameplay. People looking to spectate their friends or to spectate games after they have been eliminated can see the entire World Grid of individual mazes and every Pac-Man left in the game. They can also regularly vote on Power-Ups that will spawn in every single maze for remaining players to store and activate, which can have a huge impact on how each game is played.

You all are the professionals here – what tips can you share to help new players survive?

  • Spend some time in your own maze at the start of the game to build up your points and store some Power-Ups before you start invading.
  • Before invading another maze, approach the invasion gate to see how many PAC-MAN are in it and what level the maze is on.
  • Check that you aren’t invading into a dangerous situation by using the zoom view to see where ghosts and other PAC-MAN in the neighboring maze are.
  • Be sure to keep an eye on whether your maze is safe or whether it’s due to be eliminated at the end of the round.
  • If there’s a Power-Up in your maze that you don’t need right now, consider still moving to it to store it for later.
  • Remember any spectator-voted Power-Ups you see! Any other players you encounter after that may have that Power-Up stored up and ready to deploy against you.

PAC-MAN Mega Tunnel Battle was the first demo we were able to play during last week’s three-day event. How have players responded so far to the surprise announcement and playing the demo?

We’ve seen a terrific response so far! We’re thrilled players are enjoying PAC-MAN as a battle royale style game on Stadia, and are loving this new take on a classic. The feedback has been phenomenal. Be sure to pre-order the game on the Stadia store now so you’re ready to play when it launches on November 17!

Active until 9AM PT, October 28

Expand your empire, discover new technologies, form diplomatic relationships, and master fully tactical battles within a 4X game of monumental proportions. HUMANKIND is a historical, turn-based strategy game where you rewrite the entire narrative of humankind to create a civilization that is as unique as you are. William Dyce, Lead Designer at Amplitude Studios, has all the details for players of the HUMANKIND OpenDev Beta, and be sure to watch their posted video for beginners with more info on how to get started:

Last week’s reveal of HUMANKIND for Stadia marks the first 4X strategy game to come to the platform. What does its gameplay bring to the table that players can’t get anywhere else?

HUMANKIND is a chance for players to rewrite the entire narrative of human history.
The OpenDev Beta on Stadia has players starting at the dawn of the Ancient Era, having just founded their first city. Explore, claim additional territory, research technologies, fight or befriend neighbours, and earn as much Fame as possible in order to transition to the Classical era. Choose from 10 cultures, each with its own special trait, emblematic building, and units, with a focus on replayability as players create different cultures. The OpenDev Beta will end at the end of the Classical era or turn 100, whichever comes first.

For those players learning more about the Fame system in the HUMANKIND OpenDev Beta, what tips or tricks can you share that could help them make a name for themselves in-game?

Fame is the unified victory condition in HUMANKIND, and it can be earned in multiple ways. Each era you will have the opportunity to earn Era stars for doing things like researching technologies, claiming new territory, growing your population, or defeating others in battle. In addition, you can earn fame by completing World Deeds, each of which can only be claimed by one player. For example, be the first to explore an entire continent, discover a natural wonder, or gain access to every possible technology. Check out the list of world deeds in-game, and be sure to watch our video on Twitter for tips on how to get your game started!

Amplitude Studios has a long history of creating award-winning, best-selling 4X strategy games. What’s exciting for your team about bringing HUMANKIND to Stadia?’

The technology behind Stadia is exciting, and we love the idea of being able to play the game on a screen anywhere—we’re very proud of HUMANKIND and we want to bring the game to as many players as possible. Without revealing too much, we’ve got some possibilities in mind for Stadia specific features that we wouldn’t be able to do anywhere else. But more on that later!
